The New York State area of Brooklyn was the location of Brighton Beach Racecourse which opened on 28th June 1879 under the guidance of Brighton Beach Racing Association. The nearby Brighton Beach Hotel was owned by entrepreneur William Engeman and it was he who led the Racing Association. The 8 furlong oval track drew huge crowds of well-off people entertained by such prestigious races as the Brighton Derby and Brighton Handicap. Other feature races included the Brighton Junior Stakes, the Brighton Oaks for fillies and the Brighton Mile. Terminal disaster struck in 1908 when a Bill, the Hart-Agnew Law, was introduced by Governor Charles Evans Hughes banning betting on racetracks, sounding the death knell for Brighton Beach. Although the track remained intact hoping for a repeal of the Bill, even switching to motor racing to stave off financial disaster, the track was sold for development in the early 1920s, with a housing estate being built on the site of the former racecourse. |
